Namibia was formerly known as South West Africa. It is a country that is located in southern Africa and its western border is the Atlantic Ocean. Namibia also shares its land borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, South Africa to its south as well as south along with Botswana to its east. The country gained independence in the year 1990 from South Africa as a result of the Namibian War of Independence. Windhoek is the capital as well as its largest city. Namibia is a member state of the Southern African Development Community, the United Nations, the Southern African Development Community, the African Union and the Commonwealth of Nations. The dry lands of this country were inhabited since early times by Damara, San and Namaqua. Most of the territory of Namibia became a German Imperial protectorate in the year 1884 and it remained a German colony until the end of World War I. The United Nations recognized the South West Africa People's Organisation as the official representative of the Namibian people in the year 1973. However, Namibia still remained under South African administration but during this time as South-West Africa. South Africa installed an interim administration after the internal violence in Namibia in 1985. In 1990, Namibia obtained full independence from South Africa with the exception of Penguin Islands and Walvis Bay and they remained under South African control until 1994. The population of Namibia is 2.1 million people and it has a stable multi-party parliamentary democracy. Tourism, agriculture, herding and the mining industry – including mining for gem diamonds, gold, silver, uranium and base metals – form the basis of Namibia's economy. Namibia is considered to be one of the least densely populated countries in the world due to presence of Namibia desert. The nation enjoys economic, high political and social stability. The cost of living is high in this country because several products are imported. Namibia's economy is intricately associated and tied to South Africa's and the largest economic sectors of this country include mining, agriculture, tourism and manufacturing. This nation has a highly developed banking sector which has got modern infrastructure, such as online banking, cellphone banking, etc. In 2013 according to the global business and financial news provider, Bloomberg, Namibia was named the top emerging market economy in Africa and was given the 13th best position in the world. The data came from Bloomberg's very own financial-market statistics, the World Bank and IMF forecasts.
