This South Asian Country has China sharing its border on the north, Indian on the south and east. The country is separated in the west from Nepal by Sikkim and in the farther south from Bangladesh by West Bengal and Assam. Thimphu is not only the largest city of Bhutan but it is also its capital. The landscape of Bhutan ranges from sub-alpine Himalayan heights in north to subtropical plains in south. The population of this country is estimated to be around 770 thousand in the year 2015 total area was reported approximately around 38,394 square kilometers. The people here mostly follow Buddhism but there are many who follow Hinduism as well. Bhutan has been given the tag of happiest country in Asia and eight-happiest country in the world by Business Week on the basis of global survey.
During the early 17th century, Bhutan was merely a patchwork of the minor warring fiefs but a few religious leaders at that time felt the need to unify the area in order to save the people from religious prosecution which ultimately resulted into the cultivation of a distinct Bhutanese identity. Bhutan retained strong bilateral relations with India in the early 20th century upon its independence after coming in contact with the British Empire. In the year 2008, the country transitioned to constitutional monarchy from absolute monarchy and the first general elections were held in the same year. Being a member of the United Nations as well as SAARC, Bhutan hosted the 16th SAARC summit in 2010.
Ngultrum is known to be Bhutanese Currency but the Indian rupee is also accepted as the legal tender. The economy of this country is one of the smallest economies in the world and yet in 2008, with an annual growth rate of 22.4%, Bhutan was the second fastest growing economy in the entire world. Bhutan’s per capita income in the year 2012 was estimated around 2,420 USD and the reason behind the steady economic growth is the commissioning of the Tala Hydroelectric Power Station.
55 percent of the total population in Bhutan depends on agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. Animal Husbandry and substantial farming mainly constitute most of the agrarian practices. Selling hydroelectric power to India, tourism, agriculture along with forestry are the main components and factors that contribute into the nation’s economy. Bhutan doesn’t have any railway networks as yet but Bhutan signed a free trade with India in 2008 according to which Bhutanese will be allowed to import and export from the third market without any tariffs.
