MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian gas exports to Europe hit a record high in 2018 despite diplomatic tension between Brussels and Moscow and the European Union's desire to reduce its dependence on Russia, Russian giant Gazprom said. Gazprom, the monopoly of pipeline exports, sold 201 billion cubic meters of gas in 2018, up 3.5 percent from 2017 exports, according to Alexei Miller, the company's director for Russian news agencies. These exports represent the bulk of sales to Europe, and Russia points to the continued increase in European demand for Russian gas when defending new gas pipeline projects through Turkey and the Baltic. Gazprom accounts for about a third of European gas consumption. The group's gas production this year was 497.6 billion cubic meters, Miller said.
