The Prysmian Group has been awarded a new major order for a total cost of approximately EUR 80 million ($108 million) for power transmission system expansion projects, by KAHRAMAA, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation.

The contract constitutes engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning services for added high voltage underground cable systems for a total of 173km of 220kV cable and associated network components.
The contract is a part of second stage of Phase XI of the Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion project targeting to concrete the main transmission networks and at securing power necessities to the industrial and residential sectors.

Replacement of an overhead line with an underground cable system is also included in the latest upgrade.

The contract is the result of Prysmians’s potential to match up the increasing needs for the development of new power grids in Qatar and its critical region. KAHRAMAA has complete trust in Prysmain’s work which have already installed and supplied other regions within the KAHRAMAA power transmission grid in Qatar, says, Antonio Chiantore, general manager for Prysmian Group.

The group’s established offices in Qatar will undertake the project activities, using production from Gron (France) and Livomo (Italy). The installation of the initial circuits will begin in 2014 and the completion expected to be done in 2016.

The first-ever submarine power transmission link serving Doha, the GCC Saudi-Bahrain submarine interconnection and the 400kV power transmission system for Transco linking the Bahia and Saadiyat Grid Stations in Abu Dhabi are some of Prysmian’s projects in the Middle East.

A contract for the linkage of the Zakum offshore oil field in Abu Dhabi was also awarded to the group, recently.
