Qatar Railways Company (QRAIL) has awarded a $1bn (€750mn) contract to a consortium of Alstom to supply a turnkey tramway system for a four-line tram network in Lusail.
In the presence of the Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, French President, François Hollande and Patrick Kron, Alstom chairman & CEO, the contract was signed in Paris.
The new consortium is formed of Alstom and QDVC, a Qatari shareholding company regulatory of civil works (51% Qatari Diar and 49% VINCI Construction Grands Projects).
An option for 32 additional tramways is included as the part of Alstom’s share in the contract.
The four-line grid will cross the city covering a distance of 33km, comprising 7km underground and 37 stations.
The system is likely to enter commercial service from 2018.
The city of Lusail will be facilitated with fully integrated tramway system consisting the design, manufacturing, commissioning and servicing of 35 Citadis tramways, power supply equipment (substations, catenary and APS), signalling and trackworks.
The new Citadis tram for Lusail will be 32m in length, which will offer high-tech comfort to commuters, enhanced communications with passenger information and security systems both at stations and on-board. The tramways will be fully low floor to facilitate smooth access for all passengers.
More than 25 cities with tramway turnkey solutions has equipped by Alstom Transport.

To the north of Doha, is the city of Lusail, which is to launch a turnkey tramway system in Qatar.
The Lusail project will be the second tramway system set up in the Gulf by Alstom with APS technology, with technical transformation to provide catenary-free operation in extreme temperatures.
Since 2000, more than 1,800 Citadis tramsets have been sold to about 40 cities worldwide and are in operation, Citadis is recyclable up to 98% and highly environment-friendly.
Various Alstom sites will be included in the project such as Le Creusot, Ornans, Tarbes and Villeurbanne in France.
