1Spatial bags UK MoD’s aeronautical contract Defence and Security

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a long-term contract on behalf of No.1 Aeronautical Information Documents Unit (AIDU), to 1 Spatial plc, the spatial big data company to assist the digital aeronautical flight information file (DAFIF) upgrade project.

The contract demands the company to facilitate the construction and transition implementation phases of the DAFIF 8.1 modification.

The upgrade is likely to facilitate AIDU to manage and publish aeronautical charts and en-route bulletins that comply to the international standard for aeronautical data.

The recent contract puts 1 Spatial in a better place to target future international opportunities in this region.

AIDU is a part of the Joint Forces Intelligence Group (JFIG), formed in 1953 and delivers professional aeronautical cartographic information to the UK's Royal Air Force (RAF).

Functioning from RAF Northolt in South Ruislip, the unit facilitates maps, charts and aeronautical data decisive for mission and flight-planning globally to defence aircrew, air traffic controllers and aerospace battle managers of UK and allied military forces.

Particularly, the unit is accountable for the production of all aspects of aeronautical data, covering arrival, departure and in-flight data, and specially designed digital cockpit moving mag imagery.

DAFIF, managed by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), is a set of files including information on airports, waypoints, navigational aids, special use airspace and other data associated to flying internationally.

1Spatial is presently facilitating assistance and maintenance for the organisation's spatial data as part of a contract awarded in 2013.
