Wilhelmsburg Castle over the medieval city center of Schmalkalden with its many half -timbered houses, flanked by terrace gardens. It is one of the most beautiful Renaissance payers in Thuringia and houses one of the oldest Protestant churches in Germany.
On the site of the former collegiate church and dilapidated Wallrabsburg of the Henneberger, Landgrave Wilhelm IV von Hessen-Kassel had the castle built in 1585 as a closed four-wing plant. Due to its original spatial structure, the magnificent wall paintings and stucco, as well as its outdoor facilities, Wilhelmsburg is a jewel among the Renaissance payers in Germany. Not only the throne hall, also called giant hall, the men's kitchen and the castle chapel integrated in the construction, but also Romanesque hiking paintings with scenes from the Iwein epic in the basement make up the peculiarity of the castle.
