Background / Rationale:The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agencymandated by the General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns andcities with the goal of ensuring adequate shelter for all. In Pakistan, UN-Habitat works inpartnership with national and provincial governments, development partners, civil societyorganizations, and academic institutions to support inclusive urban development and improvedliving conditions in underserved settlements.UN-Habitat Pakistan is currently implementing a participatory settlement upgrading programme inseveral cities, including Haripur, Kohat, Peshawar, Karachi, and Quetta. In Karachi, the programmetargets 12 underserved settlements where Community Action Planning (CAP) processes are beingconducted to identify priority needs and feasible interventions. The programme combines socialprogramming with targeted infrastructure improvements, including public space upgrades, improved connectivity, and the construction and rehabilitation of small-scale infrastructure.
