The mission of the Ministry of Mines and Geology is to design, develop and implement and monitor results achieved against the objectives of the Government's policy on mining, geology and related disciplines. With the advent of the 3rd Republic, Guinea has evolved its development model to give the sectormining a prominent place. The latter was considered in the PovertyReduction Strategy Paper (DRSP) as one of the growth sectors and by the National Economic and Social Development Plan (PNDES) in force as the "catalyst" of the economy. The initial observation establishes that there are strong constraints on theactivities; these relate to the review of mining contracts, the capacity of public administrations, the availability of geo-scientific data, infrastructures and energy, qualified human resources and the possibility of supplying goods and services, relations between mining companies and communities and taking into account theenvironmental degradation, including the destruction of vegetation through exploration and exploitation activities, air pollution and global warming. It should also benoted that mining production in Guinea focuses on bauxite, gold and the diamond. The main production is that of bauxite, carried out according to processes inespecially industrial. A large artisanal sub-sector contributes to the production of gold and diamonds. The production of construction materials such as granite, sand and gravel is another significant mining activity.
