The rapid development and application of new genetic technologies combined with increasing automation, digitalization and artificial intelligence are changing the possibilities for producing genetically engineered organisms. Genetic engineering is increasingly being used Methods used not only for crops, but also for use in microorganisms such as algae, bacteria and viruses. The range of possible areas of application for genetically modified microorganisms (GVMs) is large and ranges from: Bioremediation of contaminated soil and water to the immunization of crops against harmful insects and pathogens to improving soil quality in agriculture with the help of nitrogen fixation or nutrient digestion. The breadth of the areas of application poses major challenges for risk assessment. The current research project analyzes which options are available for testing GVMs before approval and combines this analysis into a test concept. In particular, micro and mesocosm studies should be considered and which relevant endpoints can be collected with such systems. The analysis focuses on the protected assets relevant to nature and the environment. In addition to an analysis of the literature and conceptual work, the project also includes its own micro or mesocosm experiments.
