The Federal Environment Agency operates a Germany-wide air measurement network to investigate large-scale cross-border air pollution as part of international measurement programs (e.g. the UN/ECE program EMEP [2]) and to carry out measurements in the rural background according to EU air quality directive. Further information on the UBA air measurement network is available on the Internet at http://www.umweltbundesamt.de/themen/luft/messenbeobachtenueberwachen/luftmessnetz-des-umweltbundesamtes. . For the The measurement program also includes the determination of anions and cations in the outside air (PM2.5). The outside air samples are collected as filter samples on quartz filters using low-volume samplers. The sampling is carried out by the staff of the UBA air measurement network and is not part of the order. The order includes the determination of the anions chloride, nitrate and sulfate as well as the cations ammonium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium in outside air samples (i.e. in aqueous quartz filter extracts) from the UBA air measurement network Years 2023 and 2024 (optionally also the year 2025).
