The “BiodivGreen Care” research project is, for the first time, developing a nationwide framework with which municipalities can systematically record and specifically increase the biodiversity impact of their public green spaces. That is the client Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. The starting point is the realization that common key figures such as the proportion of green space or tree populations only allow limited statements to be made about the actual ecological quality of urban spaces. At the same time, there are comprehensive Species mapping in cities is hardly practical due to its high level of effort. The project therefore focuses on a central lever of municipal action: green space maintenance. Instead of measuring biodiversity primarily through species occurrence, a process-oriented approach is used Approach that focuses on care regimes and recommendations. The aim is to define maintenance categories for different urban area types and to comprehensibly evaluate their biodiversity effectiveness. Existing classification and Information systems are brought together and converted into a uniform, comparable system that can be integrated into municipal green space information systems. An exemplary practical validation in selected municipalities checks this ecological plausibility of the developed categories and sharpens the evaluation standards. Building on this, the system will be piloted and tested for its administrative feasibility - both in municipalities with existing digital ones control instruments as well as those without corresponding systems. The result is an application-oriented, nationwide usable reference system for biodiversity-effective green care. It enables municipalities to be transparent about the quality of their nursing practices to document it, make it comparable and strategically develop it further, thereby making a concrete contribution to strengthening urban biodiversity.
