The purpose of this sources sought notice is to conduct market research and identify potential sources of commercial products/services that satisfy the Government-s anticipated needs.
BACKGROUND
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) CHIPS metrology program has a requirement for a narrowband, mid-IR laser with tunable wavelength and tunable repetition rate to enhance advanced AFM metrology for measuring thermal properties of materials at the nanoscale which are being developed in the Nanoscale Device Characterization Division (NDCD), e.g., Nano Lett. 2022, 22, 11, 4325-4332.
The CHIPS Metrology Program at NIST advances metrology for accelerating R&D and for developing breakthroughs that support the development of the next-generation microelectronics and ensure the competitiveness and leadership of the United States. The development and advancement of new measurement methods and infrastructure to characterize nanoscale engineered materials and heterogeneously integrated devices is a critical part of the CHIPS metrology and NDCD mission.
Once installed at NIST, the laser will be integrated by NIST scientists to be used with NIST photothermal induced resonance (PTIR) setup (Anal. Chem. 2022, 94, 45, 15564-15569). The light pulses emitted by the laser will be used to photothermally excite a sample, while NIST custom optomechanical AFM probes, within the PTIR setup, will be used to measure the time-domain thermal expansion of the sample with both nanoscale and nanosecond resolutions. Analysis of the data will yield the sample thermal properties at the nanoscale.
For this purpose, NIST requires a laser that emit light pulses with narrow linewidth and broad wavelength tunability (to selectively excite a broad range of samples), short pulse lenght (to efficiently photothermally excite the sample) moderately high and tunable repetition rate (to enable and optimize high throughput measurements). Furthermore, the laser must have characteri...
