I. BackgroundTheWorld Bank Group-s Agriculture and Food Global Practice (GP), partly financedby a grant from the Korean Green Growth Trust Fund (KGGTF), is conducting anadvisory and analytical study on “Smart Farming for Agricultural Developmentin Dominica and Jamaica.” The objective of the study is “to enhanceunderstanding of smart farming technologies for key public and privatepartners, enabling the government to mainstream these technologies within itspolicy framework.” This initiative aims to improve agricultural productivityand resilience to climate change.Smart farming, also known as precision farming, is atransformative approach towards agriculture, utilizing advanced technology suchas sensors, GPS, big data analysis, drones, and automated machinery, thatenables farmers to optimize agricultural input use, minimizing labor, water, and/or fertilizer, while maximizing volume and quality of output. Its adoptionis generally driven by the growing demand for increased productivity andprofits of commodity crops like grains and the demand for scalable productionof high-quality crops, such as strawberries, peppers, citrus, and mangoes. Incountries like Dominica and Jamaica, where tourism industries thrive, there isa substantial opportunity to implement advanced agricultural technologies. Thehigh demand for quality food products within these regions makes smart farmingan appealing strategy to enhance both agricultural and economic outcomes. II.Objective The objective of this consultancy is to support the World Bankteam in facilitating policy dialogue with potential clients to promote smartfarming technologies in small Caribbean islands countries, specifically the Commonwealthof Dominican and Jamaica. The selected firm is expected to conductresearch on the potential adoption of smart farming technologies, draft apolicy dialogue document related to smart farming and innovative agriculturaltechnologies in these countries.
