Description : Background:

Solomon Islands is committed to develop core capacities required under the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) and gaps have been identified while submitting the annual progress report and an independent assessment undertaken in the past. One of the major gaps in implementation of IHR (2005) include strengthening surveillance and response systems. The Field Epidemiology Trainings (FETs), is a recognized mechanism for developing human resources trained in specific components of public health especially surveillance and response.

Following a series of consultations between the MHMS, WHO, and University of Newcastle/Hunter New England Health (UoN/HNE) and Australian National University (ANU), it has been decided that in-country FETs will be started by the MHMS-SIs. The FETs will be funded jointly by the UoN/HNE over a three years period (2020-2022) and with the WHO contribution.

The FETs will adopt a combination of modalities to train the staff at different levels of health care system based on the functions stipulated in the Role Delineation Policy (RDP). It will include 8 months Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) for staff working at national level which consists of three workshops. A total of 15 health professionals from national and provincial level will be trained in the first batch in 2020.
