The mosque of Hamza Bey, known as the Alcazar because of the operation of the cinema of the same name in the atrium of the monument, is the oldest Islamic ecclesiastical house built in Thessaloniki. In the middle of the 16th century, the mosque was converted into a mosque with the addition of a parapet and a minaret. The buildingcomplex was completed in the last decades of the 16th century, . From 1928 until 2006 it was used as a shopping center, for the needs of which interventions were made, which made the building unrecognizable from its previous function as a mosque. The project "RESTORATE THE PRESENT CHAMBAZBEI("ALKAZAR") IN THESSALONIKI" refers to the overall restoration of the mosque and its decoration, with rescue interventions to preserve the painting and plastic decoration, the architectural and metal elements, the plaster decorations, etc., with the criterion of the protection of the monument, the recognition of theof its structural history and highlighting its architectural value.
