During the Second World War, an underground ammunition depot for the Swiss Army was built in Mitholz (municipality of Kandergrund, Canton of Bern). In December 1947 there were several explosions. According to experts' estimates, there are in the collapsed Parts of the system and in the cone of rubble still contain up to 3, 500 gross tons of ammunition with several hundred tons of explosives. In connection with the project planning of a new data center, 2018 and 2020 were commissioned by the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) carried out another risk assessment. It became apparent that there were unacceptable risks in accordance with the Major Accident Ordinance (StFV) and the DDPS instructions on the safety concept for handling ammunition and explosives (WSUME). Based on the project order for the clearance of the former Mitholz ammunition depot from January 16, 2021, a further VBS risk analysis was developed in 2022 and assessed by the VBS expert group and the FOEN.
