Description : The Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) implements the "Strengthening the Management Effectiveness of the National System of Protected Areas" project. The technical assistance support CEPA`s systems and capacity for the effective management of a Protected Area system which is demonstrated through the improved management of the Varirata National Park a and the promotion of conservation in a larger landscape in Sogeri Plateau. In support of government`s priority to promote Varirata as the destination for tourism, bushwalking and birdwatching within Port Moresby. UNDP/GEF project as of June 2019 deployed ten (10) National United Nations Volunteer as community rangers for the Varirata National Park to enforce the rules of the Park to improve its management as well as to minimize security issues in the area that will in turn encourage more visitors. The CEPA has engaged with the JICA Project for interventions in the Park and the JICA Project has constructed some infrastructure that could be used in order to accommodate the Rangers` Lodge, as part of these ToRs.

This construction work is part of a bigger initiative to upgrade the facilities in the Park to further support a more sustainable operations for the country`s first and flagship National Park.
