Description : BACKGROUND

In Vanuatu, remarkable progress has been made against malaria. The last reported death due to malaria was in 2011, and the annual parasite incidence dropped from 32.6 per 1000 in 2010 to 2.2 per 1000 in 2018. A new National Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination 2021-2026 is currently under development to guide progress towards the vision of a malaria free Vanuatu, contributing to the good health and well-being of the population.

The gains made against malaria in Vanuatu can in large part be attributed to effective prevention with vector control, primarily long-lasting insecticidal bed nets (LLINs). While high LLIN coverage rates are reported, this has relied on proxy indicators based on the number of LLINs provided to the target population, at household level. The most recent Demographic and Health Survey was in 2013. Therefore, there are no recent data available on current LLIN access and usage in line with standard indicators. There is also limited information available for Vanuatu on community practices pertaining to re-purposing and disposal of old LLINs. Such information is important to inform future LLIN distribution strategies.
