Primary role: Develop relevant geographic information system (GIS) maps to guide the development of insecticide resistance monitoring and management plan in Malawi, using QGIS.

The consultant will:

• collate and organise available relevant data
• use an appropriate method to produce maps that help to visualise updated malaria transmission intensity, seasonality of transmission, coverage of interventions, distribution of main vector species and insecticide resistance, intensity of use of public health and agricultural insecticides, land cover and other ecological characteristics, and meteorological/climatic variables, in order to guide selection of appropriate vector control tools and help the development of a national insecticide resistance monitoring and management plan.

Background

Malaria Consortium is an international organisation working primarily in Africa and Asia on communicable disease control. Working closely with ministries of health, academic institutions and a range of partners, Malaria Consortium is involved in all aspects of malaria control from policy and strategy development to implementation, monitoring and evaluation and operational research. Malaria Consortium also works on the control of other communicable diseases, including tuberculosis, diarrhoea and neglected tropical diseases. Malaria Consortium International’s office is in London, UK and the Africa Regional Office is in Kampala, Uganda.

In collaboration with Abt Associates and working with in-country stakeholders, Malaria Consortium will support the development of an insecticide resistance management plan for Malawi, within the PMI VectorLink project funded by PMI/USAID. Primary role

Expected outputs

? Map images, the necessary GIS files, and other data files, to show the situation of malaria transmission, vector distribution, insecticide resistance, and other relevant variables described above, in different parts of Malawi and guide development of insecticide resistance monitoring and management plan in Malawi
? An appropriate QGIS template to facilitate updating of the map in the future
? A brief report describing methods used and a summary of major outputs and recommendations

Reporting

The consultant will report to Malaria Consortium’s Senior Technical Specialist – Disease Prevention.
