Description : BACKGROUND
In the Pacific, traditional foods have been largely replaced with imported, processed foods. Unhealthy diet is one of the four leading risk factors for NCDs. Poor diets lead to obesity and other forms of malnutrition. There are many drivers that influence food systems, and multiple factors that affect individual food choices.
Using fiscal policies to influence dietary choices is an evidence-based strategy for NCD prevention and can improve food systems and influence consumer decision-making.
Raising taxes on unhealthy foods can increase price and reduce affordability; while eliminating taxes, instituting price controls or even subsidies can increase availability and consumption of healthier foods such as fruits and vegetables.
