At 78 N, 15.62 E, the project is located in one of the northernmost populate areas in the world. Longyearbyen has around 2 400 residents and the electricity supply is primarily facilitated by a coal-fired thermal power plant.
Longyear power plant wants to install a battery store to increase operational reliability and reduce the environmental emissions at the power plant.
The expectations and objective of a battery park are as follows:
— able to supply the reserve capacity to the network,
— strengthen the security of supply and increase the power quality of the network,
— reduce the load on the existing steam turbines and even out the production profile for the power plant,
— reduce the diesel consumption connected to power production,
— emergency power supply for the thermal power plant.
A battery storage system will be a key part of any future energy carrier in Longyearbyen, regardless of technology.
English is the working language for the project. Implementation of the project requires that the project secures project financing.
