Antwerp Port Authority removes around 100 tons of marine water annuallylitter. The marine litter that the Port Authority is faced with consists mainly of residues of packaging material (such as wood, films and plastic), remains of bunches and fenders, litter (cans and bottles) and pellets (polymers). This waste originates from both the land side (through all sorts of activities on the quays and terminals) and from the water side (shipping). As waterwayThe Antwerp Port Authority is making daily efforts to remove this waste, not only because a sustainable and clean harbor is being strived for, but also because the floating waste can cause damage to ships and port infrastructure.

In the port of Antwerp there are a number of hotspots where there are high concentrations of marine litter naturally the sameThe Port of Antwerp wants to develop a floating and passive plastic catcher for 1 strategically chosen hotspot of marine litter, which:

1 diverts natural marine litter to 1 point;

2 the derived marine litter permanently catches pending for further drainage;

3 the collected marine litter holds at verratic meteo conditions;

4 the accumulated floating dirt can be lifted by means of a tipper truck with crane arm;

5 is partly made of recycled plastic granules;

6 is provided with maritime signage in function of safety present shipping traffic;

7 about a visual ludic character in function of project dissemination.

The assignment consists of:

1 the designto produce and produce a plastic catcher for marine litter;

2 to install the plastic catcher on the proposed maritime port infrastructure;

3 after a predetermined test phase, optimize the plastic catcher in function of delivery.

The installation of the plastic catcher is assumed in quarter 3 of 2019 and will be optimized and trained after a pre-set test phasewill be in quarter 1 of 2020.
