Tenders are invited for Consultant Posting - Creative Storyteller.
OBJECTIVE:
Right To Play International is seeking a creative storyteller to identify and develop powerful stories and compelling narratives about the incredible transformations experienced by the children in our programs.
1.0 BACKGROUND
Right To Play is a global organization committed to improving the lives of children and youth affected by conflict, disease and poverty. Established in 2000, Right To Play has pioneered a unique play-based approach to learning and development which focuses on quality education, life skills, health, gender equality, child protection and building peaceful communities. With programming in over 20 countries, Right To Play transforms the lives of more than one million children each week using play and sports, both inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to our work with children, Right To Play advocates with parents, local communities, and governments to advance the fundamental rights of all children.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK
The Global Communications department is small but has big ambitions to create fresh and compelling content and products that grab attention. We are a department that works within a collaborative, fast-paced and innovative work environment. We work hard and we always make time for play.
We are searching for the ultimate storyteller who can help us bring our brand to life. We have powerful stories to tell, but we need someone to dig deep and find them, develop them and then tell them in a compelling and creative way. We need your writing skills to give voice and visibility to the incredible transformations experienced by the children in our programs. We need you to craft sharp, authentic, compelling narratives about these children, who through play, discover a lifelong love of learning and are empowered to rise above the impacts of poverty, war and disease.
The consultant is expected to work with our colleagues in the field to identify, develop and write a series of original narrative stories as well as bring their creative and critical eye to editing and rewriting existing content and making it sing. You will also be expected to contribute to writing social media content and web copy that stands out and inspires engagement.
There is some flexibility in where the position is based but you must be able to be fully connected from your location and will be expected to communicate and collaborate with our Headquarters in Toronto and our other program locations. This position may require international travel to our program countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
3.0 EXPECTED DELIVERABLES
· Collaborate with field colleagues to identify, develop and write original character-driven, feature-length content for our website and other platforms
· Plan and generate ideas for impactful stories on your own and once approved do whatever it takes to develop and deliver them
· Edit and rewrite existing content to align with brand voice and vision
· Collaborate in creating short and concise story-based posts for social media
· Plan and write impactful stories for use on web, social media and across other platforms
4.0 KEY DELIVERABLES AND TIMELINE (NEGOTIABLE AND TO BE FINALIZED WITH RTP STAFF)
Week of June 18th:
· Consultant interviews and selection
Week of June 25th:
· Agreement for scope of work; Consultant contract signed
· Orient consultant to Right To Play methodology
July 2nd - December 21st
· Identify, develop and write original content for our website and other platforms
· Edit and rewrite existing content
5.0 QUALIFICATIONS
· Undergraduate degree in Journalism or related discipline
· Minimum 8 years- experience as a journalist and/ writer /agency copywriter producing published content for a global media and/or online outlet
· Experience crafting editorial calendars and in re-purposing stories across platforms
· Working knowledge of intermediate- to advanced-level equipment (e.g. DSLR camera, video, audio recorder, microphones)
· Knowledge of the global development landscape and related issues
· Understanding of story fundamentals (e.g. effective character, trajectory, hook, authenticity, details, coordinating and overseeing story collection and production process)
· Understanding the effectiveness and appropriateness of story assets (e.g. text, images, audio, video) and how to combine themStellar writing skills; understanding of newswriting and newsgathering techniques and calls-to-action
· Interviewing skills; how to ask effective questions and develop rapport and trust with story subjects
· Keen sense of newsworthiness (e.g. what makes a story interesting from the audience-s perspective)
· Strong copy-editing skills and attention to detail
· Able to learn quickly and gain understanding of organization-s overall programming, fundraising, communications and advocacy objectives
· A high level of creativity, a thinker and a doer, who believes in the power of a story, and knows how to create and bring them to life
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· A collaborative ‘people-s person” willing and able to quickly establish constructive working relationship with internal and external partners
