Description : BACKGROUND

According to the 2016 NCD Hybrid survey, adult tobacco smoking is 30.9% and 9.7% among males and females respectively while tobacco chewing is 40.1% and 48.9% among males and females respectively.

Palau has made significant strides in strengthening tobacco control since becoming a Party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2004 such as increasing taxes on tobacco products, prohibiting tobacco advertisement, promotion and sponsorship, and implementing smoke free public places.

According to recent focus groups with adult tobacco users in Palau, over 70% of tobacco users want to quit; however, no tobacco cessation system is in place. While some limited tobacco cessation services are provided they are ad hoc, and no referral mechanisms currently exist.

PURPOSE/SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE OF THE ACTIVITY

The purpose of this activity is to develop tobacco cessation services standard operating procedures and guidelines for clinical, public health, and community-based settings in Palau as well as to provide hands-on training for, and implementation of, the protocols and guidelines in Palau.
