ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION
IFC is seeking to introduce an IT based system in an agribusiness project and help an IFC client strengthen their traceability system from the smallholder plot where the product is grown to the final consumer of the product, their organic certification processes, agricultural planning and their interaction with the smallholder farmers in general. IFC intends to contract a Consulting Firm (the Consultant) who will establish a technology-enabled system for automating the technology requirements of the IFC client. The required solution will be a mobile- and web-based system that incorporates the intended functionalities.

About the Project

IFC-s Agricultural Technologies and Supply Chain Innovations (AgTech) project is designed to enhance

operational efficiencies in strategic agribusiness supply chains in Ethiopia through the introduction of

digital tools (AgTech), thereby improving smallholder farmers- (SHFs) productivity and income. The

project aims to pilot AgTech innovations in on-going commercial agribusiness projects in Barley, Livestock

Feed, Poultry, Goat, Honey and Horticulture. By the end of the project, 50, 000 SHFs and other supply/

distribution chain actors are expected to be engaged with AgTech solutions. These pilots will be closely

monitored to provide the basis for the business case for using Ag Tech solutions leading to an eventual

scale-up in technology use.

IFC AGRIBUSINESS CLIENT BACKGROUND

IFC-s agribusiness client is an agro processing company engaged in de-hulling and roasting organic and

conventional sesame seeds for high value markets. Currently it is exporting its finished products to USA

and the EU. It is an Organic certified and ISO 22, 000:2005 (Food Safety Management System) certified

company. It works with smallholder farmers that produce sesame seeds under a Contract Farming

arrangement. The company undertakes all organic certification procedures to get the smallholder farmers

certified by European certifying body. This procedure involves clustering smallholder farms, carrying out

soil analysis, training a majority of the farmers and Training of Trainers (TOT) on good agronomic practices

(GAP), organic farming and management; provide pre-finance to the smallholder farmers through their

cooperative managements office to support farmers get necessary inputs and labour throughout the year.

This includes, land preparation, sowing, weeding and cultivation and finally harvesting activities. In

addition, it assigns a full time agronomist who follows up on all the farming and harvesting practices and

give advisory services to the farmers. Finally it pays a premium price to the farmers for their supplies to

the company.

SCOPE OF WORK

The consultant will deploy an existing digital solution and customize the solution according to the specific

requirements of the IFC client. This will entail carrying out a thorough on-site requirements gathering from

the client. The customization work should include any specific work flows or procedures of the client and

local contexts such as the use of Ethiopian languages as necessary. We are looking for existing applications

that are at least partly “off-the-shelf” to make it easier for replication of the technology in other agribusiness projects in Ethiopia. As well as the configuration of the tool, the consultant
