Ground preparation for the construction of the heat storage Stadtwerke Flensburg GmbH operates a thermal power plant to generate electricity and district heating on the property at Batteriestrasse 48 in 24939 Flensburg. The 2 in. heat storage facility was built at this location in 2024 put into operation. This is available to the district heating supply of the city of Flensburg as a buffer storage with a capacity of around 29, 000 m3 of treated district heating water. Originally, this heat storage was integrated in parallel to the one already installed Heat storage 1 has been operating at the location of the thermal power plant for around 50 years. After heat storage 2 was put into operation, a condition assessment of heat storage 1 was carried out, which showed that renovation was possible under economic conditions is not feasible. For this reason, the heat storage 1 is currently being dismantled and replaced as planned by the new heat storage 3 to be built at the same location. The heat accumulator 3 is structurally identical to that as an unpressurized heat accumulator with a steam cushion to build heat storage 2, which is already in operation at the site. This means that a heat storage capacity of at least 900 MWh with a maximum storage temperature of 98 °C and a return temperature of 65 °C (Delta T 33 °C) and beyond that a maximum loading and Discharge capacity of 90 MW can be achieved.
