As Plan International moves to a new global strategy (2017 – 2022) geared towards ensuring that 100 million girls learn, lead, decide and thrive, Country Offices (COs) have begun to align programmes and projects to contribute to the overall objective of the new strategy. The vision of Plan International is to enhance the rights of children and equality for girls. In order to realize our objectives, we work for sustainable improvement of the general living conditions of children and adolescents as well as their families and their communities. Plan International Liberia work in collaboration with various Government institutions as well as local and national partners to achieve sustainable outcomes for children and young people in Liberia. as such, this Water Supply and Sanitation intervention is continuous and is in an effort to contribute to the goals set in the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD) “to increase access to safe water supply and sanitation and improved hygiene practices, also promoting the achievement of the Sustainable Development goal 6(Clean water and Sanitation) in Liberia”.
The funded WaSH project is Plan International Liberia sponsor project that is intended to build viable Water and Sanitation Systems for communities under the sponsorship program. The project when completed will built the capacity of key community stakeholders selected to manage the new water system, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in a sustainable way. Specific strategies and interventions will be tailored to the needs of each site in Liberia” by Plan International until July 2020. As a pilot of our new WaSH intervention, the project will contribute directly by providing and increasing access to improved water systems for two communities in Bomi, (Clay Town and Suehn Mecca) . Significantly, Water supply and sanitation projects have impacts on people’s lives which extend far beyond the expected improvements to health and reduction in time spent collecting water. Impacts will also include significant improvements in household income levels and security of livelihoods base on a specific approach considering VSLA as a wheel of change for community members.
Increased school attendance will also occur along with better child care, social and cultural benefits such as reductions in stress levels taking place at household level, there will be increased status and self-esteem, better family and community relations, and increased ability to observe religious rites and customs at micro/community and meso/district level of the project. This will enable community to withstand resilience even if there is future outbreak of any disease.
The Sponsorship Pilot WaSH Program is a four (4) months’ intervention (2019) designed and will be implemented in collaboration with other stakeholders to improve access to clean water supply and adequate sanitation including promoting good sanitation and hygiene practices.
