V362_2025 - HIPOLE - Analytical Ultracentrifuge As one of 18 centers in the Helmholtz Association, the Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB) employs around 1, 400 people at the Berlin-Wannsee and Berlin-Adlershof locations - and has a total budget of around 110 million euros. The HZB works closely with the universities and technical colleges in Berlin-Brandenburg. The HZB researches solutions for a climate-neutral society. Researchers develop and optimize efficient and inexpensive materials for solar cells, batteries and catalysts. These energy materials are essential building blocks on the path to a CO2-neutral and secure energy supply. The most important tool is the X-ray source BESSY II, which delivers intense light in the soft X-ray range. This is used to investigate the structure of energy and quantum materials and how they work. The HZB is also researching new concepts for accelerator-based X-ray sources and developing new instruments with ever higher measurement accuracies. The HZB and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena founded the Helmholtz Institute for Polymers in Energy Applications (HIPOLE) in Jena in 2023 as a permanent institution of the HZB.
