The city of Kaufbeuren is independent of a district, which means that the function of the city administration includes the Area of responsibility of a district office, combined with the tasks of a municipality. These tasks are sometimes carried out side by side in the individual departments. For this reason, the administrative processes to be represented in the GIS are compared to one "simple" community more complex. Area of the urban area: approx. 40 sq km; Population: approx. 48, 000. The city of Kaufbeuren has been strategically operating its GIS since 2004 as an administratively integrated, central system based on ESRI technology. It is as central Starting platform for all GIS-relevant applications integrated into the town hall-wide IT landscape.
