The World Bank Group (WBG), incollaboration with researchers from Georgetown University, intends to conduct aRandomized Control Trial (RCT) study of the impact of AI-assisted teaching. This study investigates whether artificialintelligence (AI) can improve learning outcomes among school children in SouthAsia. Foundational literacy and numeracy remain critical challenges in theregion. In addition, there are significant learning losses experienced bystudents during breaks between school semesters and academic years. In responseto this challenge, the study explores whether a structured winter schoolprogram can mitigate these learning losses, and whether incorporating AI-basedtools into teaching practices can enhance its effectiveness. The study will examine the impact ofan intervention involving a winter school program centered on the TargetedInstruction Program (TIP) curriculum developed in partnership with the Centerfor Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP). The TIP curriculum focuses onfoundational competencies in Urdu, mathematics, and English. The winter schoolprogram will serve students in grades 3 through 6 in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan during the extended winter break period in 2025. In addition to thecore academic instruction, the intervention includes teacher training and theintegration of AI-assisted lesson planning, grading, and educational materialsupport. The study will employ a randomizedcontrolled trial (RCT), in which study sample students will be randomlyassigned into three study arms1. Control: acontrol group receiving no intervention.2. T1: a treatment group attending the winterschool without AI.3. T2: a treatment group attending thewinter school with AI-supported instruction. Each study arm will consist ofapproximately 3, 000 students, totaling 9, 000 study sample students. Thesestudents will be primarily recruited from (approximately) 100 of the largest schoolsin Quetta, with an expected average of 90-100 students recruited from each ofthese “home”...
