The crisis in north-east Nigeria remains one of the most severe in the world, in its ninth year. In the three worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, 1.7 million persons are internally displaced and human rights violations continue to be reported daily.Poverty levels in Nigeria have been high for successive decades after the oil boom of the 1970s. By 2015, 0ver 64 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Nigeria's Human Development index in 2015 was 0.514 placing it at 152 out of 1883 countries ranked in that year. Geographical disparities in the country are demonstrated by differences in social development indicators among the 36 states with North East states consistently bringing up the rear. Poverty andhunger have remained high in rural areas, remote communities and among female-headed households.The average income per household and month in 2016 stood at US$ 60, which translates into an average income of $0.4 per day per person. This figure, which is significantly below the officially defined poverty line of US$ 1.5 per day, explains why 46 percent of households borrow money to buy food. It also explains the looming livelihoods and food crisis. moreover, income from skilled labour dropped from 21 percent before the crisis to under 5 percent today. Without immediate and significant support to economic revitalisation, this situation will be extremely difficult to reverse. In order to restore the livelihoods of skilled beneficiaries in Yobe State UNDP plans to carry out start up cash grants activity.A.ApproachThe organization will plan and manage the monitoring activities of vocational skill training of 200 beneficiaries and provision of the cash grants to those who meet the criteria out of the beneficiaries.
