Due to the discontinuation of steel and coke production at the site in Dortmund's Nordstadt and their spatial concentration on the site, large, contiguous areas fell fallow and subsequently stood for new urban development available. Several larger commercial developments with many new jobs have already been built or are currently being planned. There will also be an entire residential area with up to 800 residential units. The “Green Ring” with its approx. The 34-hectare area will be a meeting place in public space and will enhance the living environment with its sports, leisure and recreational opportunities. This creates better connections to the districts of Eving and Scharnhorst as well as to the northern inner city. The “Green Ring” is a central component of the Integrated Action Plan for Westfalenhütte (size 450 hectares) approved in 2023. This concept brings together various measures for the development of the area and its surroundings.
