Price Range 200-500 KEURO

With the increasing number of commercial and institutional lunar and deep space missions being planned with optical terminal on-board, there is the need in Europe to develop high-performance optical ground station technology and in particular cost-effective telescope solutions. Some recent and on-going ESA activities have been focusing on the feasibility of a telescope design based on segmented primary mirror. Compared to a classical monolithic primary mirror solution, this concept allows to simplify the manufacturing processes and achieve lower costs especially for large telescopes e.g. with primary apertures in the order of 6m or wider. Withthe recent availability in Europe of hexagonal spherical mirror segments in aluminium and Zerodur, a detailed design and a telescope demonstrator based on segmented primary mirror would be required as a steppingstonetowards a full scale system for future optical communications to lunar and deep space missions.Read more
