Company Information:
The spread of substandard, spurious, falsely labelled, falsified, or counterfeit (SSFFC) medicines has been a global concern. Their prevalence increasingly threatens public health by jeopardizing patient safety, leading to treatment failure, contributing to development of drug resistance, and possibly leading to diminished confidence in health systems [Monitoring the Quality of Medicines: Results from Africa, Asia, and South America, Mustapha Hajjou et al, Am J Trop Med Hyg., 2015 June 3; 92 (Suppl 6): 68-74].
Medical product regulatory systems are central to health systems; they ensure high quality and safe interventions like drugs, vaccines, and medical devices for patients who need and count on them. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes this fact and includes regulatory system functions as one of the six core building blocks of health systems: access to medical products, vaccines, and technologies of assured quality, safety, and efficacy. Effective and efficient procurement of medicines can only be achieved if supported by an effective and fully functional regulatory system.
The Liberia Medicines & Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) is the regulatory arm of government which ensures that all medicines and health products circulating the borders of Liberia are safe and efficacious. The LMHRA was established based on provisions of the National Drug Policy for the establishment of a Medicines Regulatory Authority to enact and update medicines regulations to regulate the Pharmaceutical Sector, and establishment of a national quality control laboratory under the Authority.
The Liberian Medicines and Health Product Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) was established to protect the public form unsafe, falsified and substandard medicines. In addition to assuring the quality of health products, it is also mandated to ensure fair trade practices within the Sector; Promulgate regulations to fight illegal trade in medicines, including counterfeit and adulterated medicines and health products; and conduct or facilitate necessary research and development, promote Pharmacovigilance, and timely disseminate medicines information.
