The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energie GmbH (HZB) is a legally independent member of the Helmholtz Community of German Research Centers e.V. (HGF). In order to examine structures and processes in materials, the HZB runs research infrastructures such as the synchrotron radiation source Bessy II, which u. are used by around 3, 000 measuring guests from all over the world.

HZB is a publicly financed facility (90% federal government, 10% Land Berlin).

The Helmholtz community supports the HPC Gateway project with a short term (late 2025), through which HPC services for SMEs by experts of the HZB. The required HPC-capable IT hardware (computer system: CPU server with infiniband (cable) connection) is to be obtained after tender by the HZB and integrated into the hpc system z1.zib.de at the ZUE Institut Berlin (ZIB) and operated by the ZIB for the HZB become.
