The Government of The Gambia, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is implementing a Rule of Law, Justice and Security project (hereinafter, "UNDP RoL project". The project endeavors to implement a holistic and comprehensive program which addresses both the supply and demand sides of justice delivery. It seeks to strengthen rule of lawinstitutions to deliver quality services, to empower citizens in the exercise of their rights and to increase access to justice.The UNDP RoL project, met and completed thorough consultations with the Ministry of Justice, the Judiciary, the Gambia Police Force, the Gambian Prisons Service, the National Agency for Legal Aid (NALA), the ADR Secretariat (ADRS), the Law School of the Gambia and the Gambia Bar Association to better understand the issues and challenges for strengthening the rule of law and increasing access to justice.The Ministry of Justice is not only charged with prosecution of all civil and criminal matters and drafting of legislations for government entities but also charged with overseeing and supporting the Transitional Justice program including the Security Sector Reforms Process, the Constitutional Review process and ongoing legislative reforms. In addition, the Ministry of Justice also oversees the Company Registry, Intellectual Property Registry, Civil Marriages Registry, Deeds Registry, Curator of Intestate Estate, Law Reform Commission and the Law Reporting Commission. Furthermore, the Ministry subverts the budgets of the National Agency Against Trafficking in Persons (NAATIP), National Agency for Legal Aid (NALA) and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Secretariat (ADRS) which are all key stakeholders for the Ministry`s Strategic PlaMoreover, in line with its mandate to promote and protect human rights and to oversee the implementation of the Government`s International obligation to Treaty Bodies, the Ministry`s participation in safeguarding the rights of Sexual and Gender Based Vi...
