At the Geesthacht lock, platforms including railings must be manufactured and installed on the counterweights of the lifting gates in order to be able to carry out safe maintenance work on the counterweight system. Each lifting gate has two counterweights, with four lifting gates it corresponds to eight counterweights. The counterweights run vertically in a counterweight shaft in the lifting towers (also called lock towers).
