Tenders are invited for Greenhouse Management Feasibility within the Sustainable Land Management Project.

Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in Somaliland is which started in September 2015 to continue until end of 2020. It is mainly designed to support Somaliland filling gaps and supporting projects that are fully aligned to the National Development Plan. The long term goal of the program is to promote food security and sustainable land use practices while restoring the socio-ecological integrity of mainly the Biji watershed catchment. Specifically, the intervention’s objective is to provide land users and managers with enabling policy and institutional capacity for effective adoption of sustainable land management.

The purpose of the SLM projectis therefore to improve the livelihoods of communities of the upper part of the Biji water catchment by restoring and raising land productivity. This will be achieved among others through

Participatory community land management
Supporting sustainable agricultural practice
Policy advice and capacity-building
Support to improve the Hargeisa Water Agency
Scope of the work

Within the last years a number of greenhouses have been constructed not only in the Biji water catchment, but also in other parts of Somaliland. Cultivation practices and yield differ substantially. As more and more greenhouses are erected by various individuals and organisations a study should describe best practices and the limitations for greenhouses in the Biji water catchment and beyond in Somaliland. The study should also describe the way forward.

The study should describe especially the following points:

Greenhouses used in Somaliland, description of advantages and disadvantages of the different types, investment costs, potential amortisation and sources.
Description of the different actors involved in greenhouses
Description of greenhouse management practiced and problems faced
A first description of the economics of greenhouses in Somaliland
A description of the problems the saltwater greenhouse West of Berbera does face.
The study should generally also provide a discussion about the potentialities of greenhouses and greenhouse cultivation within Somaliland.

The study should describe more detailed the potential way forward for greenhouses and greenhouse cultivation in Somaliland. This could include proposed respective training modules, the description of suitable types of greenhouses; recommendations, which could be suitable partners, for addressing the different aspects around greenhouses in Somaliland, how extension services for greenhouse cultivation could be organised and, but not only, planning the future of the saltwater greenhouse near Berbera.

The study should be carried out within one month.

Minimum content of the offer

1. Description of how the work will be carried out and what locations will be assessed.

2. Schedule of time needed for the study with a time table.

3. The final study report has to be submitted in English in good quality and be professionally written.

4. CVs of all senior participants in this assessment have to be submitted. Experiences with similar work, especially around greenhouses have to be explained.
