Futures study: What is the next frontier for clean energy technologies? What does this mean for CIF?BackgroundSince its establishment in 2008, the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) has played a catalytic role in advancing clean energy technologies. Rapid technological innovation, evolving financing models, and shifting geopolitical dynamics now require CIF to anticipate the next frontier of the clean energy, technology and infrastructure that will underpin an economic future driven by intensive electrification.Positioned within CIF-s Strategic Directions is a mandate to support the scaling of finance and the deployment of advanced technologies that enable energy system transformation. This study will present a written assessment of the frontiers in advanced clean technologies needed to scale clean energy solutions in response to accelerating electrification demand driven by the digitalization of the global economy. The study will, in consultation with MDBs and relevant stakeholders, identify strategic opportunities for the Climate Investment Funds to continue leading the acceleration of technology and innovation to remain at the forefront of the energy transitionBroad objectives· Identify emerging/ future energy related technologies, and related geopolitical considerations· Assess the next frontiers for advanced clean energy technologies [e.g. advanced geothermal, nuclear, storage, smart grids, …] with a particular emphasis on the implications of the digitization of the global economy· Consider the geopolitical factors (e.g. global and national interests) that may shape both supply and demand of advanced clean technologies and financing? · Position these considerations within CIF-s Strategic Directions mandate and make recommendations to inform CIF-s support for frontier advanced clean energy solutionsExpected Use· Inform the Trust Fund Committee in the context of CIF-s Strategic Directions· Inform future CIF program design· Support donor engagement and strategic posit...
