Every year there are around 50 million tons of settlement waste in Germany, of which more than two thirds of a material recycling are made. Non-recyclable and mixed settlement waste is either treated thermally treated or used energetically either directly or according to a mechanical-biological or mechanical-physical preparation. This hygienized the waste, the pollutants contained therein are drained out or destroyed from the recycling circuit and the energy it contains is used. The oxidation of the organic components of waste creates around 20 million tons of unavoidable CO₂ emissions annually, of which 50 percent are originated. In order to achieve the federal government's climate goals, thermal waste treatment must also be defossilized.
