Refoplan 2026: “Environmental Drug Index - Establishment of an environmental information and classification system for drugs in Germany” Pharmaceutical residues in the environment pollute our water resources and can have significant ecotoxicological consequences cause problems. The drug index environment will be an important component in the life cycle of drugs in order to reduce the entry of problematic drugs. The index lists active ingredients based on their harmfulness to organisms in the environment classified and provides information on environmental behavior that can be incorporated into therapy recommendations. This concept of a pharmaceutical environmental information and classification system for Germany was presented in workshops and lectures relevant stakeholder groups and in the press (including DAZ, PZ). The feasibility of the concept, which consists of information, classification and various communication systems, was confirmed in a project (FKZ 3723 65 4030). The The Federal Environment Agency will now implement the developed concept of the environmental drug index. The aim of the project is to accompany this process in a participatory manner with many stakeholders and to anchor the index as an information institution in Germany Actively support the health system. In a work package, the update of the UBA database “Medicines in the Environment” will also be commissioned for the period 2021-2026 in order to ensure that the data base on the problem is currently available place.
