Street sweepings contain varying proportions of mineral components (sand, grit, stones); organic components (leaves, branches). Other typical components include packaging waste, paper handkerchiefs and cigarette butts. Furthermore, the sweepings contain contaminants from road traffic such as unburned fuel and lubricant components (e.g. due to dripping losses); abrasion from road surfaces; Tires; Brakes and clutch linings as well as salt from winter service.
