Cork groves, cork oak forests (Quercus suber), constitute a major ecological, economic and landscape heritage in several Algerian Mediterranean regions. These forest formations present structural and functional diversity important, but their state of conservation is worrying: • Degradation of populations and densification of scrubland; • Abandonment of traditional silvicultural practices; • Vulnerability to fires and diseases; • Anthropogenic pressures and competition with other species. The establishment of a typology of Algerian cork groves will make it possible to: • Identify and describe the types of populations and their state of degradation or restoration; • Evaluate the potential for cork production, by category, in taking into account, beforehand, the health status and vulnerability of the different types of cork groves in the face of threats (fires, drought, diseases, pests); • To guide management and sustainable restoration; • To promote natural regeneration and sustainable production of cork; • To contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and the prevention of fires and all parasitic attacks; • To produce thematic maps (types of populations, risks of degradation, production potential) for decision-makers and forest managers.This typology constitutes a strategic tool for planning silvicultural interventions and ensuring sustainable management of Algerian cork groves.ObjectivesThe objective...
