Description : DEVELOPMENT OF MATERIALS SUPPORTING RISK COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (RCCE) ON COVID19 IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (CAR)

1. Context

The introduction of COVID-19 in the Central African Republic (CAR) was notified on 14 March 2020 by the Minister of Health and Population (MoHP). Subsequently, four (4) other imported cases were confirmed on 19; 22 and 24 March. As of 4 May, 85 cases were finally reported. Based on these epidemiological data, the Minister of Health and Population declared local transmission on 1 April 2020. This outbreak occurs in a context where there are many Internally Displaced People (IDP) sites and a high potential for co-morbidity due to the measles epidemic, high prevalence of malnutrition, HIV infection, tuberculosis and malaria. The initial rapid assessment reveals that the risk of importation and spread is high due to the frequency of international flights into and from Bangui (currently suspended), trade, porous borders and the weak capacity of the health system to detect cases early and ensure adequate case management. However, the government has enacted and strengthened preventive measures.

UNICEF is acting as facilitator of the Risk Communication and Community Engagement Sub-Commission (RCCE) under the auspices of the Emergency Operating Centre (EOC).
