The rapid development and application of new genetic technologies combined with increasing automation, digitalization and artificial intelligence are changing the possibilities for producing genetically engineered organisms. Genetic engineering methods are increasingly being used not only for crops, but also for applications in microorganisms such as algae, bacteria and viruses. The range of possible areas of application for genetically modified microorganisms (GMM) is wide and ranges from the bioremediation of contaminated soil and water to the immunization of crops against harmful insects and pathogens to improving soil quality in agriculture with the help of nitrogen fixation or nutrient digestion. The breadth of the areas of application poses major challenges for the legally required monitoring of genetically modified organisms, because knowledge about the biological diversity of microorganisms, the composition of microbial communities and their role in the ecosystem is limited.
