Access to electricity is afundamental human right essential for development. Currently, 600 millionAfricans lack electricity, impacting healthcare, education, productivity, andjob creation. The World Bank Group (WBG) and African Development Bank (AfDB)have joined forces in an ambitious initiative aimed at providing electricityaccess to at least 300 million people in Africa by 2030. The WBG plans toconnect 250 million individuals, while the African Development Bank Group aimsto support an additional 50 million people. For effective planning, policymaking, prioritization, reporting and investment across the West Africa regionto achieve the above-mentioned goal, there is a crucial need for access to reliable electricity data. Despitenumerous efforts already made to support the electrification of the region, collating existing spatial and non-spatial datasets on the electrificationstatus and available infrastructure across the continent remains challenging.Various deliverables, such as SDG[1], MTF[2], GEP[3], andinitiatives utilizing night-time light imagery and leveraging geospatial least costelectrification planning solutions, have contributed significantly to thisendeavor but the outputs are still scattered, acting as a barrier for easy use byenergy teams. Often teams are challenged to accessthe latest available dataset in a country, hindering decision-making processes.To address this challenge, there is a need to establish a comprehensive, up todate spatial data platform that consolidates existing datasets into a unifiedand accessible format. A current platform WACEL platform - consolidates existing electricity data forCôte d-Ivoire, Senegal and Niger.
