Micro(nano)-plastics are plastic particles below 5mm in size originating as manufactured primary particles (e.g printing inks, cosmetics etc.) or secondary particles produced by mechanical or chemical degradation of larger plastic components. A key technology in detecting, identifying and quantifying individual micro-plastic particles is the combination of optical microscopy with chemical imaging analysis by Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (micro-FTIR) and it has been judged necessary to proceed with the purchase of such an instrument for use in the development of this new research area.
