Conventional test methods are not necessarily suitable for the testing of some industrial by-products as well as recycled construction materials in earthworks. For example, can often be determined in the Proctor trial no Proctor Optimum in terms of a maximum in a water content. Therefore, this research project will investigate the extent to which conventional test proceduresn for recycled building materials and industrial by-products, in order to prove the suitability of the building material for its intended use.

For the contract-proof application, it is necessary to establish rules by which building materials can be assessed as to their suitability. The use of industrial by-products and recycled building materials in earthworks should continuen possible, if there is nothing to prevent this for reasons of construction and environmental technology.

Possible procedure: As part of a literature search, data on the structural properties of industrial by-products and recycled building materials in earthworks must be compiled. In a next step, a survey of those involved in the construction and associations to determine which building materials bwhich test procedures lead to incidents and problems. In laboratory experiments, the soil engineering behavior of natural soils (crushed grain) is comparable to that of granulometric comparable industrial by-products or recycled building materials. On the basis of the results of the laboratory tests, comparative investigations with those from the laboratory experiments are to be selectedmaterials in large-scale tests. From the results of all investigations, proposals for the further development of the existing road construction regulations for the classification, aptitude testing and testing of such materials in the field shall be developed.
