CONTEXT

UN Women is a United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women established by Resolution AG A64 / 289 of 02/07 / 2010.UNU Women`s mandate is to assist UN Member States to apply global standards to achieve gender equality. UN Women works to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls, empower women and achieve gender equality as partners and human rights, humanitarian action, peace and security. In carrying out its mission, UN Women works with governments, civil society and all other stakeholders to design, develop and implement laws, policies,

In Burundi, the UN Women office focuses on three themes:

Women, Peace and Security,
Fight against sexual and gender-based violence
Economic empowerment of women.
Burundi`s economy is essentially agricultural. The primary sector (agriculture, livestock and fisheries) occupies a large part of the active population (90%), particularly the female population (55.2%), compared to 8% for the tertiary sector and only 2% for the secondary sector. According to the 2008 General Census of Population and Population, of the 80.2% of the population who own land, 62.5% are men and 17.7% are women. In the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries sector, there is very little access for women heads of households to agricultural credit, since they have no counterpart required for the granting of agricultural credit (land titles, holding of livestock, etc.) In this context, [1]

Burundian women perform 70% of the agricultural work. However, they are not well organized, have limited access to productive resources, and have little control over them because of unfavorable laws, negative cultural practices, and other structural factors. Unequal access to productive resources, including land, finance, technology, skills, time and markets, contributes to high levels of rural and humanitarian feminized poverty, affecting their food security, productivity and livelihoods . [2]UN WOMEN estimates that agricultural yields in 34 developing countries could experience an average increase of 4% if women had access to the same resources as men. This increase would reduce malnutrition to 17%, which would represent some 150 million fewer undernourished people in these 34 countries. [3]

Under the supervision of the Women`s Economic Empowerment Program Specialist, the UN Women office plans to conduct a study on strategies to reduce these disparities in the provinces of Bubanza and Bujumbura Rural. Thus, the results of this study would serve as an advocacy tool for key ministries for access to agricultural resources and opportunities for women (land acquisition, land title, agricultural credit, etc.) while ensuring the strengthening of the capacities of women farmers. key ministry officials in participatory and accountable, sensitive and transformative gender planning.

Functions and expected results

objectives

Identify agricultural financial financing institutions facilitating access to credit for women in the two provinces mentioned above
To serve as an advocacy tool to facilitate the development of a National Strategy integrating the specificities of women for a climate resilient agriculture including innovation and modernity
